چکیده

Slow slip events (SSEs) at subduction zones can precede large-magnitude earthquakes and may serve as precursor indicators, but the triggering of by slow remains insufficiently understood. Here, we combine geodetic, Coulomb wedge failure-stress models with seismological data to explore potential causal relationship between two SSEs 2018 Mw 6.9 Zakynthos Earthquake within Hellenic Subduction System. We show that both released up 10 mm aseismic on plate-interface were accompanied an increase in upper-plate seismicity rate. While first SSE late 2014 generated only mild failure stress changes (≤3 kPa), nevertheless sufficient destabilize faults various kinematics overriding plate, second caused 25 kPa prior mainshock. Collectively, these affected a highly overpressured mechanically weak forearc, whose state fluctuated horizontal deviatoric compression tension during years preceding Earthquake. conclude this configuration facilitated episodes seismic deformation ultimately triggered

Earthquake hazards on the cascadia subduction zone.

Large subduction earthquakes on the Cascadia subduction zone pose a potential seismic hazard. Very young oceanic lithosphere (10 million years old) is being subducted beneath North America at a rate of approximately 4 centimeters per year. The Cascadia subduction zone shares many characteristics with subduction zones in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, where comparably young oc...

heterogeneity within the orientalist discourse: representation of the orient in womens travelogues and mens paintings

from 1950s onward, new theories and critical approaches burgeoned across humanities. these theories were context-oriented; as a result, the analysis of discursive practices gained significance. thus, social, political, historical and cultural discourses that have been hitherto marginalized and considered inferior to literary texts, were introduced as important texts to be analyzed by critics. o...

Slip segmentation and slow rupture to the trench during the 2015, Mw8.3 Illapel, Chile earthquake

The 2015 Mw8.3 Illapel, Chile earthquake is the latest megathrust event on the central segment of that subduction zone. It generated strong ground motions and a large (up to 11m runup) tsunami which prompted the evacuation of more than 1 million people in the first hours following the event. Observations during recent earthquakes suggest that these phenomena can be associated with rupture on di...

Earthquake and tsunami forecasts: relation of slow slip events to subsequent earthquake rupture.

The 5 September 2012 M(w) 7.6 earthquake on the Costa Rica subduction plate boundary followed a 62-y interseismic period. High-precision GPS recorded numerous slow slip events (SSEs) in the decade leading up to the earthquake, both up-dip and down-dip of seismic rupture. Deeper SSEs were larger than shallower ones and, if characteristic of the interseismic period, release most locking down-dip ...

Aseismic slip transients emerge spontaneously in three-dimensional rate and state modeling of subduction earthquake sequences

[1] To investigate the possible physical mechanisms of recently observed aseismic slip events in the Cascadia, Japan and Mexico subduction zones, we apply a Dieterich-Ruina rate and state friction law to a three dimensional model of a shallow subduction fault. That is loaded by imposed steady plate slip rate far downdip along the thrust interface. Friction properties are temperature and hence d...
